The Witches Poppet has a long, long history in Europe, and counterparts to it can be evidenced around the world  (the Voodo Doll of Voudom & Santeria religions, the mandrake root etc.) .

Essentially, the Witches Poppet is a small doll, traditionally fashioned from wax or sewn from cloth. It is simple, featureless and is employed in sympathetic magick. The Poppet is individualised to represent a particular person by forming a magickal link via something personal - for instance, a lock of hair, fingernails, a scrap of handwriting, photograph  or a combination of things (the more personal the better). These are attached to the Poppet, or, as in the case of the cloth-made ones, may be stuffed into it before sewing up the opening.

The Poppet becomes the focus of the rite and the aim is to directly influence the person thus represented. Intentions vary. A Poppet may be used to affect healing, love, prosperity or used for  more baleful intentions (in the latter it is customary to use the thorns of a Blackthorn tree due to its correspondence with fate and strife - not steel pins).

A singular Poppet is never used for different intents, or different people, on account of the energy raised and transferred by the ritual working. It is more common that a Poppet will only be used once.

Poppets should ONLY be used by those of sufficient training in these arts.

Very interesting indeed.
Something I haven't quite touched on yet in my magical studies.
